Centenarian joy lights up Highveld Gardens as two residents celebrate remarkable milestones
Highveld Gardens proved that ageing does not mean being forgotten, as two residents, reaching 100 and 105 respectively, were placed firmly in the spotlight during a celebration that honoured legacy and belonging.
Faith in God, resilience, and a life well lived were at the heart of a moving celebration at Highveld Gardens Retirement Lodge in Halfway Gardens, where reaching 100 was honoured, and reaching 105 was hailed as nothing short of a miracle.
On December 19, residents, staff, and invited guests gathered under one roof to celebrate two extraordinary women, Sybil Pearson and Cathy Ellis, whose combined ages tell a story of more than two centuries of lived history, wisdom, and grace.

The milestone celebration was filled with warmth, laughter, and heartfelt applause, as Pearson marked her 105th birthday and Ellis proudly celebrated her 100th year.
The intimate yet joyful gathering paid tribute not only to the remarkable ages of the two centenarians, but to the inspiration they continue to offer to those around them.
Highveld Gardens Retirement Lodge, which has been part of the Halfway Gardens community for over 30 years, is recognised for its family-style approach to care. The facility prides itself on inclusivity, dignity, and independence, welcoming residents regardless of age, race, gender, affiliation, or health status.
Centre manager Pulane Motlafi described the celebration as a deeply meaningful moment for everyone involved. “Today we are celebrating two ladies’ birthdays, Mrs Sybil Pearson, who is turning 105, and Cathy Ellis, who is turning 100 years old. It is truly a blessing to reach this age. Not everyone gets to experience such long lives, and we are honoured to share this special moment with them.”

Motlafi added that the lodge’s philosophy is rooted in care without exclusion. “We have been here for 30 years, and we accommodate all kinds of people. We don’t only take the elderly. We also welcome people with disabilities or those who are unwell. Anyone who wishes to retire and be cared for in a family environment is welcome here.”
Sharing her wishes for the birthday celebrants, Motlafi expressed hope that the December celebration would not be the last milestone they would share together.
“I wish the birthday girls many more years. They may be old, but you can see they are still strong. I would also like to thank the Midrand community and the Midrand Reporter for coming to celebrate these two remarkable ladies with us.”
