City acts against illegal building on Harry Galaun Drive

An unauthorised structure on Harry Galaun Drive was marked for immediate demolition as the city intensifies by-law enforcement.

City of Johannesburg officials conducted a thorough inspection of an illegal structure encroaching on the road reserve at Harry Galaun Drive, Midrand, marking it for immediate demolition on February 2.

These unauthorised structures are not only violations of municipal by-laws; they represent serious safety hazards for both motorists and pedestrians.

Unauthorised structures, defined as any construction, extension, or alteration lacking prior written approval from the local municipality, are clear breaches of South African municipal by-laws, the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act 103 of 1977, and zoning schemes.

Following the demolition, Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Dada Morero took to social media, stating that the era of lawlessness has come to an end.

“Today, City of Johannesburg officials identified and inspected a prohibited structure encroaching on the road reserve at Harry Galaun Drive in Midrand, leading to its immediate demolition. Unauthorised buildings not only breach municipal by-laws but also create serious safety risks for motorists and pedestrians.”
