Midrand security officer shoots 2 colleagues before turning gun on himself

After the tragic shooting in Highway House, Midrand, police have opened two murder cases and an inquest docket.

A tragic shooting in Halfway House, Midrand, left three security officers dead on November 13 after an argument reportedly spiralled into deadly violence.

The incident unfolded on a quiet stretch of road not far from Gallagher Convention Centre, where three colleagues from the same security company had allegedly been sitting together and drinking alcohol shortly after knocking off duty at around 11:30.

According to authorities, an argument broke out among the men, leading one of the officers, aged 36, to fatally shoot his two colleagues, aged 29 and 31, before turning the gun on himself. All three were still in full uniform at the time of the incident. Paramedics declared the men deceased on the scene.

Speaking on site to Tembisa Online founder Mfanelo Dzanibe, Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said preliminary investigations indicate the altercation escalated quickly.

“Information at hand suggests the three security officers were sitting on this road enjoying themselves when an argument started,” said Masondo. “It is alleged that one of them took out a firearm and shot at the two colleagues. He then turned the gun on himself.”

Police opened a murder case and an inquest docket

Masondo confirmed that police have opened two murder cases and an inquest docket. “At this stage, we are not sure what triggered the argument, but that forms part of the investigation. There were people nearby, and we will be taking statements from them,” he added.

The shooting occurred near the Pan African Parliament precinct. Masondo noted that although police officers were in the area, the incident had already concluded by the time they arrived at the scene.

“Unfortunately, when they heard the gunshots and went to the location, it had already happened, so there was no way they could have avoided it,” he said.
