Teacher accused of raping learner appears in court

The case against an Ivory Park mathematics teacher accused of raping a learner has been postponed for a formal bail application next week.

In a disturbing case that has shaken the local community, a 37-year-old mathematics teacher from a school in Ivory Park appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on March 6.

The teacher is facing allegations of rape involving a 17-year-old female learner under his instruction. The matter has been remanded until March 13 for a formal bail application.
According to information presented in court, the educator is accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with the learner, whom he allegedly taught. The incident is said to have occurred in December 2025, after the teacher reportedly offered additional private tutoring services to the learner outside of official school hours at his residence.

He was arrested on March 4 in Birchleigh North by members of the Norkem Park South African Police Service. Police reportedly located him at his brother’s residence after he allegedly attempted to arrange a meeting with the victim’s parents in an effort to have the case withdrawn by offering money, which the parents reportedly refused.

The Gauteng department of education has confirmed that it has initiated internal investigations into the matter. Authorities have emphasised that the case will now proceed through the legal process, while the department handles the matter administratively.

In a statement released on March 5, Gauteng MEC for Education Matome Chiloane expressed the department’s deep concern over the allegations, stating that educators are entrusted with the responsibility of nurturing and guiding our learners, and that they must always contribute towards ensuring the safety, well-being, and development of our learners at all times.

The department has also reached out to the family of the learner to offer therapeutic and counselling services during this difficult time.

Speaking to Newsroom Afrika media on March 6 at the court, Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona acknowledged the seriousness of the incident, noting the department’s ongoing efforts to vet educators and ensure the safety of learners within the school environment. However, he also emphasised the importance of maintaining the continuity of educational services, urging parents not to be disrupted and to allow the legal process to take its course.
