Reckless driving a concern on Glen Austin roads

JMPD is aware of the situation, and has taken note of the various reports regarding both reckless driving and the non-functional traffic lights in Glen Austin.

Glen Austin resident Mike Wiggill has expressed his growing concern regarding the alarming increase in reckless driving occurring along George, Allan, and Olifantsfontein roads.

This troubling behaviour has become particularly noticeable during peak traffic hours. Wiggill highlighted that both taxis and private vehicles often attempt to cut in line along these busy routes as they try to navigate through the congested traffic.

The malfunctioning traffic lights at the Allan and George roads corner also contributes to these chaotic driving conditions.

Glen Austin resident Mike Wiggill says the traffic lights on Allan and George roads corner have not been working for over eight months.

“Vehicles coming from Old Johannesburg Road, and heading towards George Road, frequently try to weave through the backup formed at the intersection of Allan and George roads, particularly because the traffic lights at this corner are unfortunately broken,” said Wiggill.

He noted that the traffic lights have been non-operational for over eight months. A situation that has been repeatedly brought to the attention of Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).

Despite these reports, Wiggill feels that little progress has been made, as he has only witnessed law enforcement in the area once or twice. “Even when police are present, they seem unable to stop drivers from recklessly cutting through traffic,” he added.

In response to these concerns, JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla acknowledged the reports about reckless driving behaviours and the ongoing issues with traffic light malfunctions on these routes.

“JMPD will implement proactive patrols in the reported areas to address and curb these offences,” said Fihla. “JMPD will escalate the issue of the non-functional traffic lights to Johannesburg Road Agency for their maintenance.”
