New Jerusalem seeks generous support this Mandela Month
Alongside ongoing donations, an exciting new initiative, the Youth Camp, promises to provide hope, resilience, and life skills to young lives in need.
This Mandela Month, the New Jerusalem Children’s Home is set to inspire a remarkable wave of generosity, especially following a heartfelt food donation from the Hyde Johannesburg Hotel Rosebank.
The home eagerly anticipates not only the influx of donations but also the launch of an empowering Youth Camp, which is scheduled to begin on July 7. With an expected attendance of 80 to 100 young participants, this camp aims to make a significant impact.
Moetapele Phalafala, a business solution representative for the home, highlighted the pressing need for such an initiative in today’s fast-paced, digital-driven world.

“Young people are grappling with unprecedented challenges, from social media pressures to educational disruptions,” he noted. “This camp is not merely about entertainment; it’s a vital opportunity to build resilience, faith, and essential life skills that will help youth navigate life’s hurdles.”
As a well-established sanctuary for vulnerable children, the home continues to offer vital love, shelter, and education. Yet, with only 80 out of 120 children currently receiving funding from the Department of Social Development, it is clear that meeting the increasing needs of its residents will require significant support.

Looking ahead, Hopkins Kaira, the home’s marketing manager, emphasised the importance of contributions during Mandela Month, a time when many organisations and individuals rally together to give back.

“In this month, we see many people and organisations stepping forward to help,” said Kaira. “As the home expands, so do the needs, ranging from maintenance, school materials, and uniforms to everyday essentials. The children deserve a safe and nurturing environment, and these donations will play a critical role in achieving that.”
The home’s wish list for this Mandela Month is extensive and includes storybooks, fencing, gates, dustbins, furniture, paint, toiletries, food, cleaning supplies, and more. The call for volunteers is also anticipated, as individuals are encouraged to lend their time and skills.
“Tasks like weed removal behind the centre and outdoor maintenance are crucial for creating a welcoming environment for our children,” Hopkins added. He also shared the exciting news that the classroom project now only awaited a donation of paint to enhance the learning space.

Tshepiso Mofokeng from the Hyde Johannesburg Hotel expressed excitement over the impactful early donation made on July 4, which heralded the start of a month filled with giving. “For us, donating is part of our ethos, and we are thrilled to contribute well ahead of Mandela Day on July 18,” Mofokeng shared.
“New Jerusalem was introduced to us by one of our colleagues who has been closely connected with the home. Our partnership began in 2023, and we have been consistently donating food. It’s an initiative that warms the heart, allowing us to engage directly with the children.”
