Literacy Leap launches new library in Mayibuye Primary School

Literacy Leap founder Hlengiwe Mkhwanazi said the library is about turning pages into lifetime opportunities.

Final year student from The IIE’s Varsity College in Waterfall and founder of Literary Leap Hlengiwe Mkhwanazi believes constant reading can help learners find a lifetime of opportunities.

She said this shortly after Literacy Leap opened a new library in Mayibuye Primary School on September 5. Mkhwanazi said Literacy Leap is a movement of hope, rooted in the belief that every child deserves access to books.

“It is about creating spaces, starting right here in our community, where children can dream bigger, think wider, and see possibilities far beyond their circumstances. It’s about putting a book into the hands of a child who has never owned one before. It’s about turning pages into opportunities. Literacy Leap is not just about building a library; it is about building confidence, imagination, and possibility in the lives of children.”

She began working on this project in March, and thought that it was going to be easy. In the exact words she said to herself: ‘300 books… Quick and simple. We will be done in a month’. Little did Mkhwanazi know the journey would take her out of her comfort zone, but it has been so worth it.

Mkhwanazi thanked sponsors and partners: Avbob, MacMillan Education, Miss Tembisa Pageant, Pick ‘N Pay Schools club, and The Society for Animals in Distress. “And to every person who donated – whether it was one book, a box, or a coin at the robots – you are part of this movement. Your kindness has placed the gift of reading into the hands of children who may one day grow into authors, leaders, and dreamers because of what you gave.”

Mayibuye Primary School principal Kgabo Rammutla thanked the Literacy Leap team.

“On behalf of the school, teachers, learners, and the department, we appreciate what you have done. This library will go a long way in serving our learners and ensuring that they read.”
