Ward 110 councillor Angie Mphaho attributes manhole blockages in Mayibuye to increasing population

Mphaho said due to the increase of informal settlements in Mayibuye, people were building over these manholes.

Ward 110 councillor Angie Mphaho said that the growth of the Mayibuye population is also contributing to the blockages of some manholes.

This comes after residents, Nthabiseng Mohokare and Tinyiko Maluleka, told this publication that they were plagued by constantly overflowing manholes.

“Yes, Bulelwa Makomane Street is a problem… But another thing contributing to these blockages is that the population has increased from what it was, putting a strain on the infrastructure,” said Mphaho.

She added that due to the increase of informal settlements in Mayibuye, people were building over these manholes.

Mphaho refuted allegations that once unblocked, the manholes block again in two to three hours.

“Joburg Water does come to unblock, and it takes about three to four days, then blocks again. It is not true that it blocks for a few hours again,” added Mphaho.
