Movement issues warning to Mayibuye community as illegal dumping continues
After a resident was caught dumping waste shortly after a clean-up campaign, Mayibuye Youth Movement leaders say stricter action may follow against offenders.
Residents of Mayibuye are being urged to take pride in their environment and stop illegal dumping and littering following another successful community clean-up campaign led by the Mayibuye Youth Movement.
The movement conducted its second clean-up campaign of the year last weekend, targeting areas along Inkwenkwezi, Senamurula, and Theresa streets, with a strong focus on spaces surrounding a local school and clinic.
According to Mayibuye Youth Movement spokesperson Thabiso Mehlape, the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to build a cleaner, healthier, and safer community.

“We plead with our people to do away with illegal dumping sites and stop littering. Those who are found littering will be given a hefty punishment.”
His comments follow an incident where a resident was allegedly caught attempting to dump waste shortly after volunteers had completed cleaning the area.

Mehlape said the campaign attracted about 45 volunteers, including community members and street vendors operating around Theresa Street.
“We have taken it upon ourselves to conduct regular cleaning programmes so that our community can always remain clean. The inspiration behind this programme is to achieve a clean and healthy community.”

Despite the success of the campaign, the group faced challenges due to the unavailability of a tractor-loader-backhoe, needed to remove heavier waste. However, Mehlape expressed gratitude to Pikitup for supporting the initiative.
“We would love to send our gratitude to the management of Pikitup for providing us with garbage plastics and a truck. These resources helped us complete our campaign without any major difficulties.”

Following the clean-up, the party held a community meeting to educate residents about the importance of maintaining a clean environment and changing attitudes towards littering and illegal dumping.
The movement now plans to formally request a skip bin from Pikitup to help reduce the impact of illegal dumping in the future. Mehlape said more clean-up campaigns are already being planned, as several illegal dumping hotspots still need urgent attention.
“We expect to see a clean community that is free from littering and illegal dumping sites.”
