Ubuntu Rabie Ridge Foundation extends helping hand to the elderly

Following successful youth-focused initiatives, the Ubuntu Rabie Ridge Foundation shifted its attention to senior citizens with a blanket donation and community soup kitchen.

The Ubuntu Rabie Ridge Foundation continued its mission of supporting vulnerable members of the community by hosting a blanket and soup drive for elderly residents in Rabie Ridge on July 10.

Since its establishment earlier this year, the foundation has rolled out several community outreach initiatives, including sanitary pad drives for schoolgirls and winter essentials distributions for young people. This time, volunteers shifted their focus to senior citizens, providing warm blankets and serving hot soup at a local park.

Foundation president George ‘Loveg’ Henry said the initiative was inspired by the challenges many elderly residents face during the cold winter months. “For many seniors, staying warm is a daily challenge, and we wanted to provide comfort, dignity, and reassurance that they are valued and remembered.”

Close to 100 elderly residents benefited from the initiative, receiving blankets and warm meals. Henry said some of the food was also shared with other community members, including children. “The beneficiaries were identified with the assistance of local community leaders, ward representatives, and volunteers who know the needs of elderly residents, ensuring that support reached those who are most vulnerable.

“Many elderly residents face financial hardship, making it difficult to afford warm clothing, blankets, nutritious food, and heating during winter. Some also experience loneliness and limited family support. Winter often increases these challenges, which is why community support is so important.

“This initiative was made possible through the generosity of our donors, local businesses, community members, volunteers, and partners who contributed blankets, food supplies, and their time. Their support demonstrates the positive impact we can make when we work together.”

Beyond providing practical assistance, Henry said the foundation wanted elderly residents to know they are appreciated. “Our message to the elderly is simple: You are valued, appreciated, and not forgotten. We wanted every elderly person to feel loved, respected, and supported by their community. Small acts of kindness can restore hope and remind people that they matter.”

The foundation is planning several outreach initiatives in the coming months, including youth empowerment programmes, food parcel distributions, school support projects, health awareness campaigns, and festive season assistance for vulnerable families. “Our goal is to continue serving the community throughout the year.

“We aim to create sustainable programmes that address immediate needs while empowering individuals and strengthening community partnerships for lasting impact.”
