Young and aspiring Midrand Shotokan Karate martial artists triumph at friendly tournament

Midrand Shotokan Karate's Shihan Dalson Seanego believes such successes serve as powerful motivators, inspiring the young athletes to dedicate themselves to even more rigorous and intelligent training.

Karatekas of Midrand Shotokan Karate (MSK) anticipated the start of the season, brimming with excitement to demonstrate the skills and techniques they have acquired at the esteemed karate club.

The young and aspiring martial artists of MSK displayed palpable enthusiasm and eagerness throughout February, fuelled by the opportunity to participate in a friendly tournament held in Lenasia by Funakoshi Shotokan Karate.

The tournament served as a valuable platform for these young athletes to showcase their abilities and gain competitive experience.

In the highly competitive boys’ category, for participants aged between eight and nine years, Theo Zulu (9) distinguished himself by securing gold medals in both kata and kumite.

Tyler Willis (8) also demonstrated exceptional skill and determination, earning well-deserved silver medals in both kata and kumite, and adding to the club’s success, Cayden Harmse (8) proudly took home a bronze medal in kumite.

In the older boys’ category, specifically for those aged between 10 and 11 years, Donnel Bastew (10) made his mark by achieving a silver medal in kata, further contributing to MSK’s impressive medal haul.

Meanwhile, in the boys’ category for participants aged between 14 and 17 years, Aphile Zulu (14) showcased his mastery of kata, earning a prestigious gold medal. Rui ‘jnr’ Massunda, another talented athlete in this age group, secured silver medals in both kata and kumite.

Dalson Seanego, head instructor at MSK, emphasised the significant role these achievements play in the development of his students. He believes that such successes serve as powerful motivators, inspiring the young athletes to dedicate themselves to even more rigorous and intelligent training, ultimately enabling them to achieve even greater heights in future competitions and events.

“These accomplishments pave the route for participation, not only at the regional level, but also on the provincial and national stages,” said Seanego. “Well done to these young champions. As their instructor, I am immensely proud of what they have achieved in a remarkably short period of time, demonstrating their commitment and potential.”

Looking ahead, MSK is eagerly preparing to host its annual flagship event, the Gold Karate Tournament in September. Until then, the club remains actively engaged in the karate community, continuing to participate in various friendly tournaments to provide its members with ongoing opportunities for growth and competition.
