Youngsters from New Jerusalem Children’s Home join the Midrand Chess Club for a practice session
By introducing children from different backgrounds to the world of chess, the club seeks to nurture future champions and create a space for friendship and learning.
The Midrand Chess Club had a delightful day of strategic gameplay as children from New Jerusalem Children’s Home joined their practice session on March 28 at Halfway House Primary School.
This visit aimed to enhance the skills of both groups, inspiring a love for chess in all the youngsters as the club prepares for an exciting season ahead.

Kgosimang Molefe, the coach of the Midrand Chess Club, kicked off the day’s activities with a warm welcome to the young guests. The session began with a focus on tactics, allowing the children to refine their skills before diving into competitive play.

“We then moved on to playing, with an eight-versus-eight encounter, and two games played on each side,” Molefe explained.
The friendly competition proved to be both engaging and educational, showcasing the talents of the young chess players, and fostering camaraderie between the two groups.

The Midrand Chess Club emerged victorious, but the day ignited enthusiasm among the children from New Jerusalem, and encouraged them to participate in chess matches more frequently.
As the chess season gears up, the club is excited to announce its participation in the Moja Chess Extravaganza, one of the largest chess events in South Africa. This is an opportunity for the members to showcase their skills and compete against some of the best players in the region.

The club also has an action-packed schedule lined up, starting in June, which includes hosting multiple tournaments, such as: Bootcamp, the Midrand Rapid, the Juniors’ League, and the Midrand Open.
Molefe concluded the day with heartfelt gratitude, thanking the children from New Jerusalem for visiting the Midrand Chess Club. He emphasised the importance of such interactions, stating that they keep the club’s juniors on their toes, and encourages a spirit of healthy competition.
