Waterfall City Athletic Club’s founding member’s remarkable running journey
Kenneth Lethole bases his recent Comrades Marathon success on his insatiable desire, despite pain and challenges along the way.
The saying: No pain, no gain, augurs well for Waterfall City Athletic Club’s (WCAC) founding member Kenneth Lethole who completed his 10th Comrades Marathon on June 8.
Lethole was awarded a unique green number, which is given to Comrades runners after completing 10 Comrades Marathons. He also won his record fifth silver medal in the process.
However, the journey for him has not been as sweet as the rewards he’s reaping. Lethole’s running career began in 2011 with a challenging start, ending up in the hospital after completing his first Soweto Marathon.

Despite this setback, his determination and passion for running saw him embark on a journey that would lead to numerous achievements.
In 2013, Lethole participated in his first Comrades Marathon, crossing the finish line in 10:51:00. Over the years, he has accumulated an impressive collection of medals, including one bronze, four Bill Rowans, and five silvers, with a personal best time of 07:00:06.
“This milestone was particularly significant as it came after 11 attempts and was achieved with yet another silver medal. This year’s Comrades Marathon was especially satisfying for me, considering that I was recovering from an injury I sustained during the Two Oceans Marathon in April,” said Lethole.

Lethole attributed his success to God Almighty and the unwavering support of his family and his club, WCAC, especially the chairperson, Muneiwa Ndonyane.
He also extended his gratitude to their sponsors, Attacq, Busamed Private Hospitals, Waterfall Management Company, his physio Floyd Lebatie, his biokineticist Divani Du Toit, and his training partner Mafera Kgwale. Their support made all the difference, and Lethole acknowledged that he wouldn’t have made it without them.
Ndonyane said Lethole’s journey is a testament to his resilience, dedication, and the incredible support system around him. “His story is an inspiration to many aspiring runners, and a celebration of the spirit of perseverance.”
Ndonayane added that a record-breaking 401 WCAC runners, affectionately known as the Blue Wave, made their presence felt, earning a coveted spot in the top 5 biggest clubs at this year’s Comrades Marathon.

She added that, as they reflect on the triumphs of Comrades 2025, they are reminded that this club is more than a team; it’s a movement. “Together, we rise. Together, we run. Together, we win.”
