Midrand Striders celebrates 97% success rate at Comrades Marathon 2025
This year's success marked a huge milestone for the club, especially as every novice who joined the race managed to cross the finish line.
Midrand Striders Running Club has once again demonstrated its excellence and dedication by achieving a remarkable 97% success rate in the 2025 Comrades Marathon.
Out of the 70 registered club runners, 67 participated on the day, and only three runners could not race due to medical and other reasons. 65 striders successfully completed the race, which brought the club’s success completion to 97%
Tsenoli Tiheli, the chairperson of Midrand Striders, praised the runners for their outstanding performance, highlighting that they surpassed the Comrades’ overall finish rate of 86%. “With a race covering [close to] 90km, runners face numerous challenges and often have to readjust their targets as the going gets tough,” said Tiheli.

This year marked a significant milestone for the club, as every novice crossed the finish line, which was one of the biggest highlights of the day for the club.
“The club fosters a ‘triple F mantra’: Family, Friendship, and Fitness. We are committed to inclusiveness, which helps our runners feel at home regardless of their backgrounds. The interaction among members is harmonious, making it easy for them to seek advice from senior members about running tips and training plans.”

Despite the race’s challenges, the support from cheering crowds and the runners’ resilience propelled them forward.

“The excitement along the route helped push our runners to the finish line. Now that we have put the 2025 Comrades down run behind us, we are gearing up for the plans for the 2026 up run. It’s going to be a long journey as we prepare for more marathons and ultramarathons, including Om Die Dam, Two Oceans and Irene.”

The club’s primary focus is its upcoming race in August, for which it anticipates hosting 2 500 athletes. Besides running events, the club participates in community activities, partnering with organisations such as Kyalami Corner and the Rotary Club.

“Our community activities include providing underprivileged communities with new pairs of running shoes. We have already identified the Diepsloot Athletics Club, where we will be handing over the shoes in the coming weeks.”
The club has developed a comprehensive programme packed with activities throughout the year, culminating in November with an awards function to recognise and reward runners for their dedication and achievements.
