Waterfall City Athletics Club celebrates a milestone year of growth in 2025
The club chairperson Muneiwa Ndonyane looks back at a terrific year, which included 401 members qualifying for the Comrades Marathon, 370 actually taking part, and an 89.7% finish rate.
The Waterfall City Athletics Club (WCAC) reflects on a truly remarkable year, one defined by growth, unwavering community spirit, and unforgettable moments on the road.
Since its inception seven years ago, WCAC has steadily grown into one of Gauteng’s strongest and most vibrant running communities.
With over 1 000 active members, the Blue Waves, as they are popularly known, have shaped the running culture, whether at the starting line, the finish line, or cheering loudly from the sidelines with their energy and vibe.

Club chairperson Muneiwa Ndonyane says the club caters for everyone, offering distances from 5km to 35km, guided by a structured weekly coaching programme for members.

“Whether someone is walking their first 5km, returning from injury, building up to a marathon, or preparing for Comrades, the club meets every runner exactly where they are, with support, patience, and community.
“From Polofields Crossing Shopping Centre, the Blue Wave flows through the heart of the city, taking scenic and diverse routes that showcase the best of Midrand. Our feet have touched Mall of Africa, Waterfall City, Kyalami, Woodmead, Allandale, Vorna Valley, Blue Hills, and many of the neighbourhoods in between.”
She said this was a historic year for them at the Comrades Marathon, where they delivered one of their most outstanding performances. Ndonyane said a total of 401 club members qualified for the marathon, while 370 lined up in Pietermaritzburg, achieving a feat of 89.7% finish rate.

“This turnout places WCAC among the strongest performing clubs in the race. An achievement that speaks to the club’s discipline, training systems, and unwavering camaraderie.
Our presence was also felt at major national races, including the Cape Town Marathon, where nearly 400 runners would have lined up had the event not been cancelled. Across Gauteng and beyond, the Blue Wave continues to show up, stand out, and uplift.”

She said the athletes’ impact extends far beyond simply having members participate in races. She added that the club actively supports the broader running community by assisting at official waterpoints at various races to support other clubs that are hosting.
“Even at races, without being an official water point, the club establishes supported points along the route, offering encouragement, hydration, and moral support to both their own members and every runner on the course.
In this way, they consistently bring the spirit of running, unity, and community to every event they attend.”
