Midrand Promotional League title race tightens as Hawks FC and Midrand United go neck-and-neck
With consistency on both sides, the Midrand Promotional League race is heading for a thrilling conclusion.
With just seven matches remaining in the 2025/26 Midrand Promotional League season, the race for the title is reaching a fever pitch.
Hawks FC continues to sit at the summit, but Midrand United FC (MUFC) is breathing down their neck. Hawks lead the standings with 34 points, while United remain close behind on 30 points, setting up what is expected to be a tense and potentially season-defining finish.
Both title contenders collected maximum points in their latest league fixtures played at Rabie Ridge Stadium on April 12. Hawks secured a convincing 3–1 win over fifth-placed Real Super Stars, while Midrand United delivered a comfortable 2–0 victory against bottom-of-the-log Kwaito Football Club.

The results have intensified the pressure at the top, with both sides showing strong form as the campaign approaches its final stretch.
Hawks FC manager Albert Zakhele Motha said the title race remains wide open, and that he expects every remaining fixture to carry significant weight. “MUFC has been consistent, and kept the pressure on us throughout the season. Every game now feels like a final because one slip could change everything at the top.”
Despite the pressure, Hawks have enjoyed an impressive season so far, spending a large portion of the campaign at the top of the table.
Motha believes their consistency has been key to maintaining their position. From 13 matches played, Hawks have recorded 11 wins, one draw, and one defeat, scoring 47 goals and conceding just nine. “To win the league, I believe we need to stay close to maximum points in the remaining fixtures, probably winning at least five or six of the last seven games.”

While Hawks secured a 2–1 victory against Midrand United in the first-round encounter on February 15, Motha is fully aware of the challenges posed by the return fixture, which could be crucial in the title race. “Yes, we are still going to play MUFC, and it will be a very important fixture. It has the potential to be a league decider, but we understand that the title won’t be won in just one match. Every remaining game is crucial.”
Midrand United remains one of the strongest defensive sides in the league, having conceded only four goals so far, while scoring 24. They have recorded nine wins, three draws, and only one loss, the same number of defeats as Hawks FC.

Motha credited his squad’s success to discipline, teamwork, and consistency. “The players have shown great commitment, and everyone understands their role. We’ve also been strong both offensively and defensively.”
However, he acknowledged that maintaining top form has not come without challenges, particularly off the field. “Although maintaining consistency and managing pressure has been a major challenge, financially it has also been very difficult to keep the team running, as we currently do not have sponsorship.

“The team is being sustained through personal contributions, which is not easy. We are actively looking for sponsorship and would truly appreciate any support to help us continue competing at this level.”
Looking ahead, Hawks will face seventh-placed Wanga FC on April 19 at Rabie Ridge Stadium, while Midrand United welcomes Kaalfontein DF at Halfway House Primary School.
