Local musician ‘Bentley 450’ shares how he became a music producer

MIDRAND – Karabo Matli, known as Bentley 450, shares the challenges he has overcome in his music career.

Local music producer Karabo Matli, known as ‘Bentley 450’, shares what it has taken for him to get to where he currently is in his career as a music producer.

Matli said he got into beatboxing in primary school, and in Grade 8 he decided to begin to pursue his passion for music.
Matli explained that he would come up with melodies and beatbox them. He would then add a beat which is how he comes up with most of his songs. “I then heard about this digital audio workstation [music production software].

“One of my [friends] hooked me up with the demo version of it before I was able to get a full version of the software from one of my friends at school. From then on, I have just been making beats, since around 2011.”

He explained that despite challenges, he is committed to his craft. “Right now, the only challenge would be getting credit when people steal beats from you, and another challenge would be getting your beats heard because, when you’re producing, you are obviously going to develop a certain style, your own style. A challenge I had back then was just not having people accept my style, but so far so good.”

He said that with hard work he has been able to share more of his style. Matli added that all his challenges have assisted him to treat himself as a brand and have led him to look at himself as more than just a beatmaker. “I came to understand that there is a difference between being a producer and a beatmaker and now I can attest that I make better music.”

He indicated that he will be releasing a project with some local and international artists soon. “My master plan going forward would be to see myself on a billboard making and producing big songs and deejaying again.”
