Chery adds more affordable Lux models to space-age Omoda C5

Newly added Lux models benefit from features, albeit not all, offered on the top-spec Elegance but not the entry-level Tech.

Despite launching the standalone Omoda brand only last month, Chery has already realigned the coupe-styled C5’s range as it prepares for the debut of the Jaecoo marque due before the end of 2023.

Unveiled in a three model configuration, the range now spans five derivatives with the addition of the Lux and Lux S positioned between the unchanged base-spec Tech and the two Elegance versions; standard and Elegance S.

Elegance spec, lower price

Although no changes been made to the Tech’s spec sheet, the newly added Lux becomes the recipient of items originally found only the Elegance such as the black leather electric seats, heated and folding mirrors and 18-inch instead of 17-inch alloy wheels.

While it loses out on the ventilated front chairs, electrochromatic rear-view mirror, red brake calipers and the majority of the active safety systems on the Elegance, it does receive the following carryover features not availed to the Tech:

  • eight-speaker Sony system;
  • heated door mirrors;
  • rain sense wipers;
  • electric tailgate;
  • panoramic sunroof;
  • 360-degree surround-view camera system

Lux S

On the Lux S, a similar strategy from the Elegance S applies, namely a so-called styling package that adds red exterior accents and a choice of two dual-tone colours; Aerial Silver and Khaki White contrasted by a Carbon Crystal Black roof.

As on the Elegance, the Lux also sports a two-tone arrangement of its; Light Green with a Khaki White roof. The mono-tone hues on the Tech and Elegance also continue without change.

No drivetrain change

Up front, the combination of the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and CVT remains, with the latter delivering the former’s 115kW/230Nm to the front wheels only. Claimed fuel consumption is 6.9 L/100 km.

In terms of boot space, the Omoda C5 offers up 378-litres, which increases to 1 075-litres with the 60/40 split rear back folded down. Also unchanged is the 169 mm of ground clearance.

Price

As before, the new additions’ sticker price include a five-year/150 000 km warranty, a five-year/70 000 km service plan and Chery South Africa‘s ground-breaking 10-year/1 000 000 km engine warranty.
