Team ready to vie for cup in the Cape

A total of nine players in the Mpumalanga ladies hockey team are from Lowveld clubs.

NELSPRUIT – The Mpumalanga ladies hockey team is ready to dominate. As simple as that.

That is the general feeling relayed to Lowvelder by the team that will travel to Port Elizabeth to take part in the interprovincial tournament (IPT) on Sunday.

“We have had tremendous growth in our preparation over the past 12 weeks and I believe that we will peak on tour,” says captain, Carey Clarke. Vice-captain, Christie Botha reiterated this statement, saying that the fact that the provincial league has continued throughout their preparations, has helped them to not only learn new set pieces and skills, but also implement them in their game.

The team consists of players from both the Lowveld and the Highveld, with a remarkable eight of the 15 currently representing Lowveld Country Club. One player from White River Country Club rounds out the total of nine representatives from the Lowveld.

The team will be playing teams from all over South Africa, including big names like Southern Cape and Border.

The team recently held a raffle ticket sale in which a top of the range Princess hockey stick was up for grabs. Juanta Barnard, representing White River won the stick. “I am very grateful and I can’t believe that the South African men’s hockey team captain, Austin Smith, has signed it,” she said happily.
