The fire started at the back of ther popular whoelsaler situated just metres from the Valencia Combined School. The blaze devoured nearly 120 wooden pallets before making it’s way into the factory itself. There it engulfed one of the company’s most expensive pieces of equipment, the Beta Pack machine. “This piece of equipment is used to pack our popcorn snacks and when it was purchased nearly six years ago, the company paid close to R2 million for it. The pallets range between R180 and R200 a piece so the damage could be estimated in the region of nearly R2 million if I had to wager a guess.”

According to the owner of the establishment, mr Kobus Venter, the fire brigade was extremely efficient and arrived on the scene within moments after receiving the call. “Our security company, Hi-Tech Nelspruit responded to an alarm that was trigger in the warehouse after the fire caused the electricity in that building to cut out. Upon their arrival they alerted Hi-Tech guards who in turn called me to come to the site. When I arrived here the fire brigade were already on the scene, and for that I would like to commend them.”

At the time of going to print the cause of the fire could not be determined nor could the exact amount in damages be calculated. Nobody was hurt in the incident and police are investigating the matter.
