KABOKWENI – Residents in the area are under siege because of a reign of terror by the unmasked ‘Plasma TV gang”.
It has come to this paper’s attention that these so-called plasma-TV gangsters are targeting homes with flat-screen TV sets because they are after certain components in these TV sets, which is allegedly used to make drugs.
Some of the community members who spoke to this paper revealed that they know the ring leader but were afraid to reveal his identity since he was said to be a known hard-core criminal.
One resident from Newscom, who wanted to stay anonymous, told Mpumalanga News that she had been attacked by three men, who were known to her, in her house.
“They threatened my life and only took the plasma TV set. I am glad that they didn’t hurt me – maybe because I cooperated with them,” she said.
According to the spokesperson of the local SAPS, Capt Shirly Ngomane, housebreakings in the area have increased.
“We have noticed that these days, cases of housebreakings are taking its toll and in most cases criminals are targeting the flat-screen TV sets but we don’t know why.
As part of ensuring the safety of our communities, we have increased police visibility and we are now patrolling the areas 24 hours a day,” she explained.
