Government to commemorate the Hectorspruit accident
An amount of R114 000 will be given to the affected families through a trust account that was opened by the Nkomazi Municipality for citizens to pledge solidarity with the affected families.
The Department of Public Enterprises in collaboration with the Nkomazi Municipality, Transnet and the Office of the Premier in Mpumalanga will host a commemoration event on 14 September in honour of the 24 people killed during last year’s train accident involving a train and a truck at Hectorspruit, Mpumalanga.
The Deputy Minister of Public Enterprises, Mr Bulelani Magwanishe, the Premier of Mpumalanga, Mr David Mabuza, councilors for the Nkomazi Municipality and senior officials of Transnet will lead the event on Saturday at the old Tonga Showground in Mpumalanga.
Deputy Minister Magwanishe and Premier Mabuza will handover funds to the survivors and eligible beneficiaries on behalf of the victims of the accident.
Last year the Minister of Public Enterprises, Mr Malusi Gigaba, Premier Mabuza, Members of Parliament, Transnet officials and Board members visited the accident scene. A mass memorial service and funeral services followed where the Municipality was tasked to open an account on behalf of victims and survivors. Transnet committed R500 000 to the fund.
This weekend the Department of Public Enterprises, through Transnet will remember the victims and survivors of the accident and hand over the R500 000 to the fund, and groceries to the value of R147 000 to the affected families.
