Nxesi commits to creating more jobs through EPWP

"Millions of people rely on us for a better life."

The Minister of Public Works, Mr Thulas Nxesi has committed to create more job opportunities through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

This he announced during the 2013 Kamoso Awards which were held on October 2, 2013 at the Middelburg Banquet Hall in the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality. Nxesi was in the company of MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Ms Dikeledi Mahlangu who handed out trophies and certificates to the winners.

There was a total of 94 competitors within 34 categories in four different sectors which include the Social Sector, Environment and Culture Sector, Non-State Sector and Infrastructure Sector.

In the Infrastructure Sector there were 26 winners which included amongst others, projects called Siyasebenza, Vukuphile, Siyatentela and many more which were awarded in the category of Best maintenance project, Best sakhabakhi project and best construction project.

Under the Social Sector there were 21 winners which included best innovative project, best marketed programme, Best School nutrition programme, best tourism safety monitors and more

Under the Environment and Culture Sector there were 20 winners like Msukaligwa Farmers Association, Mbombela Stadium Management, Central Improvement District CID Project, Beautification in Volkrust to Land Care.

Under the Non-State Sector there were seven winners which included amongst others, Best Innovative Project which was won by Soncoba Umjindi HCBC, Best Project Non Profit Organisation Programme won by Kgaphamodi Community Project and Masakhane Trust which also won the best innovative project.

During his keynote address, Nxesi said: “Millions of people rely on us for a better life. We, therefore, want to commit ourselves that more jobs will be created through the EPWP programme. These awards have become the biggest tool to promote the EPWP awards and I commend all the projects that met the requirements of the adjudication process and I want to congratulate the winners”.

The Kamoso Awards were launched in 2007 and are the brainchild of the National Department of Public Works. The main objectives of the awards are to recognize excellence in the implementation of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) and to showcase the best performing projects in the province.
