ALEXANDRIA – No major hiccups were reported during the special voting on Monday and Tuesday.
About 21 656 people in Mpumalanga had registered for special voting, with 3 614 voting stations opening on both days.
Independent Electoral Commission provincial spokesperson, Mr Sibusiso Nkosi said since the first day of the special voting, the process had been incident free with more than 4 000 homes visited by IEC officials by the end of Monday.
“I can safely say that the special elections are so far running smoothly in the province with no incidents of violence,” he indicated.
Bushbuckridge Mayor, Cllr Renias Khumalo also cast his vote at Alexandria primary in the same classroom he attended during his early years schooling.
“I must say that this is history and to have been part of this country’s beautiful past has taught me to be humble,” stated the mayor.
He commended the youth in particular for enhancing democracy by participating in Wednesday’s elections.
Another resident who was visited by IEC officials during their home visits in this village was Mr Bros Matsane(72) who is living with a disability. Matsane, who knew the process very well, mentioned that he has never missed an opportunity to cast his vote since the birth of democracy.
“For as long as I live, I will participate during elections because I love what this country has become since we started voting. Now I am free to walk around without carrying my ‘pass’.” he added.
