Taxi driver to face the music

“If it is true that he did not possess the appropriate documents, it should not end by the arrest for the falsified document, but the driver should also be prosecuted for murder".

MBOMBELA – The taxi driver who was involved in a crash that killed eleven people on the R23 road between Perdekop and Standerton is behind bars.

Mpumalanga News has learnt that the passengers were killed instantly when the two vehicles, a truck and a taxi collided head-on after the driver of the taxi allegedly jumped a stop and go operation in that road.

Traffic and police officers who attended the crash scene requested a driver’s licence from the driver and produced a falsified documents, clearly indicating that he might have pasted his picture on the document.

He was taken to the hospital as he was slightly injured and arrested immediately after his release.

He is facing a charge of falsifying a driver’s licence and driving a vehicle without a license.

It is unclear at this moment what other charges will be brought against the driver.

Meanwhile the Mec for community safety, security and liaison Mr Vusi Shongwe has welcomed the arrest of the taxi driver.

“If it is true that he did not possess the appropriate documents, it should not end by the arrest for the falsified document, but the driver should also be prosecuted for murder because he knew that he was not competent to be a driver of a motor vehicle or a public transporter for that matter,” said Shongwe.
