SAPS Kanyamazane seizes R500 000 worth of dagga

The driver of an overturned vehicle scrambled to make off with half a million rands' dagga. He was apprehended by the KaNyamazane SAPS and will appear in court tomorrow.

KANYAMAZANE – Dagga with an estimated street value of R500 000 was seized from an overturned vehicle in the township this morning after police caught the driver trying to hide the dagga in the wreck.

Capt Gladys Fakude of the local police was informed of a car accident this morning at 6:00. A Toyota Hilux 2.7 bakkie had overturned close to the KaNyamazane Ehlanzeni District Offices of the Department of Education.

The SAPS rushed to the scene.

They found a very distressed driver on the scene. The reason for his distress however was not the overturned bakkie.  According to WO Andries Sikwambane, the driver had managed to get out of the wreck and was frantically trying to remove bagsful of goods from the vehicle upon their arrival. Further inspection revealed the reason for his frantic activity – the bakkie was loaded with dagga.

According to Sikwambane, the police asked him about the cargo. “I am coming from Barberton,” he replied.

“When cannabis is transported from Swaziland it is often done via Low’s Creek and Barberton.  This route is used regularly by smugglers,” Sikwambane and Fakude commented.

The 194,1kg of dagga that was confiscated from the suspect is estimated to have a street value of about half a million rand.  The suspect was taken into custody and will appear in the KaBokweni District Court tomorrow.
