Students appear in court for violent protest

According to police the students apparently emptied fire extinguishers around the offices and set some of the offices on fire.

ACORNHOEK – FET students appeared in court in connection with public violence.

The 12 students from Acornhoek TVET college aged between 17 and 25 years appeared before the Acornhoek Magistrate’s Court on a March 18 faced with charges of public violence.

This follows a violent student’s protest at the college where students were demanding to be accommodated at the college and financial aid for their studies.

According to police the students apparently emptied fire extinguishers around the offices and set some of the offices on fire. As a result, police were forced to disperse the crowd and arrested suspects.

They were released on warning and the case postponed to April 1 pending further investigation.

The police Acting Provincial Commissioner in Mpumalanga Gen (Adv) Meshack Nogwanya condemns the spate of violent protests in the province. He said that it is an offence to damage property and violate other people’s rights during protests.

Police are continuing to monitor the situation around the college and surroundings.
