BARBERTON – During this time of the year incidents of rape escalate. It has been alleged that some parents allow their children to do as they please under the pretext that it is the festive season.
It has been recently discovered that it is mostly minors who fall victim to rape. In light of this, the local police conducted a door-to-door campaign at Etingulubeni section.
The aim was to teach residents about rape and domestic violence. “We are encouraging people to come out when they are abused at home and report the matter at the police station.
At the same time, we are appealing to parents to make sure their children are always in a safe place and make sure that they don’t interact or accept gifts from strangers because they might be raped,” they cautioned.

The campaign came at a time when community members were still reeling from shock after two children aged two to three were raped by an unknown suspect who is currently in custody.
Meanwhile, the local branch of the ANC Women’s League recently stated that rapists must rot in jail and not be granted bail.
This was said while members were picketing outside the local Magistrate’s Court to oppose bail for Zizwe Yende, who is accused of raping a three-year-old girl in the CBD.
