Women urged to report abuse

According to the police, women are silent about abuse they endure on a daily basis and they urged them to report such matters.

GUTSHWA – As part of their 16 days of activism against women and children abuse, Kabokweni police visited the village’s clinic to raise awareness about the social ill.

According to Capt Shirley Ngomane, this area is one of the hot spots plagued by domestic violence.

“We have discovered that most women are silent about abuse they endure on a daily basis and we are here to urge them to report such matters.

Our door is always open to assist women and children who suffer at the hands of men who are supposed to protect them,” said Ngomane.

However, a number of women told Mpumalanga News that it was pointless to report cases of domestic abuse because if there isn’t enough evidence, the suspects are usually released and abuse them even further when they get released.

“We want to break the silence but we are scared that reporting could mean the end of our lives since investigations usually take long and some suspects are released on bail to come out and haunt us,” said Ms Stelinah Shabalala.
