Police warn communities of “spiked drink”

It is alleged that the victim had just withdrawn money when he was approached by unknown men who asked him for directions. In the process, the men invited the victim to their car and was allegedly offered a drink and that was the last thing he remembers until when he found himself lying on the road near Doornkop outside Middelburg.

The police in Mpumalanga urged people not to accept drinks offered to them by an unsuspecting people because that can lead to one losing his/her life or even their belongings.

This comes after a 65-year-old principal was reported missing when he never returned home from work last week Thursday. His vehicle was found parked in the parking lot of a shopping complex in Middelburg with keys in the ignition.

According to eyewitnesses, the victim was allegedly spotted climbing into a BMW and a case of kidnapping was registered for investigation purposes. While the police were intensively looking for the victim, news broke that he was found by a bus driver abandoned the following day on the road between Groblersdal and Middelburg. It appeared that the victim was not feeling well and was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

The investigation led the police to Polokwane in Limpopo after a number of transactions and withdrawals were done on the victim’s ATM card and as a result, three suspects were identified. Police then launched a manhunt for the trio and they were all brought to book.

The suspects, Sello Mondli Letsile (35), David Mozamani Mathebula (60) and Khutjo Sbensa Mohlabya (28) are facing charges of kidnapping, attempted murder and robbery. During the arrest, one of the suspects, Letsile was found in possession of a silver BMW which is believed to be the one which was used in the kidnapping and instruments suspected to be used in the commission of crime.

Police further seized another VW Polo which is also believed to have been used on the same day to transport the other suspects to Polokwane. The trio appeared at the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday and were remanded in custody until June 12 pending further investigation and a formal bail application.
