Investment and Mining Conference to boost Mpumalanga economy
The conference aimed to showcase Mpumalanga’s economic opportunities.
The Investment and Mining Conference, described as a game-changer, was launched at the Mpumalanga Economic Growth Agency (MEGA) building in Mbombela on Friday, September 26.The launch was one of the build-up activities supporting the two-day conference, initiated by the Mpumalanga provincial government. The conference was held in Middelburg on October 2 and 3.
According to the provincial government, while mining is one of Mpumalanga’s economic backbones, contributing 20% to the province’s GDP, the conference will also highlight the vast investment opportunities – not only in mining, but also renewable energy, gas products and agricultural production.

MEGA is mobilising a broad spectrum of stakeholders in line with its mandate as a development agency. These include government representatives, mining houses and investment agencies, who were invited to attend the conference to discuss investment strategies for inclusive and sustainable growth.
It is envisaged that R50b will be raised through pledges by the end of the conference, and that the event will facilitate dialogue and collaboration between government and the business sector.
The MEC for economic development and tourism, Jesta Sidell, said the launch serves to outline the key objectives and expectations for the highly anticipated event, which is themed “Driving investment for a sustainable and inclusive economy.”
She said the mining sector is a cornerstone of the provincial economy, contributing significantly. “While mining will remain the key focus of the conference, we will also highlight the vast opportunities in the green economy.”
Sidell said the conference laid the groundwork for a new economic strategy to counter slow growth caused by international geopolitical factors.

“We are repositioning our province as a globally competitive investment hub. This conference will help establish Mpumalanga as an investment destination of choice, forging a future where our wealth directly benefits our people while attracting more investment,” said Ndlovu.
