Sesi Lomkhulu empowers sisterhood

Women shared their touching personal stories of how they survived trauma in their lives. A panel discussion and a networking session featured at the fundraising event.

The Sesi Lomkhulu Foundation fundraising event was held at the Christie’s at 32 on Russell Guest House on October 31.

The cosy event hosted women from all walks of life. The session offered valuable networking opportunities and featured a panel discussion curated by Mpumi Mbethe.

Sesi Lomkhulu, loosely translated as ‘big sister’, is an organisation dedicated to creating a world where empowered women uplift and support one another.

The founder, Anthea Samuels Ngubane, said the foundation, established in 2014 in Matsafeni, is rooted in the community and exists to nurture young girls into strong, self-assured women who rise and pay it forward.
They work with young girls aged 11 to 23 years and help them navigate adolescence and grow into leaders.

“Sesi Lomkhulu is more than a charity, it is a movement. We understand that each girl should have a guiding hand, a caring mentor and a role model who helps them navigate life’s challenges. Our programmes are designed to foster leadership, independence and self-worth, especially among girls from vulnerable or low-income communities,” Ngubane said.

The foundation works in collaboration with Child Welfare Nelspruit and is currently looking after 72 school-going girls across the province while some are outside Mpumalanga at tertiary institutions.

The event was attended by local women who came to listen to inspiring stories of how others had survived challenges such as divorce, abuse, grief or unemployment.

Mbethe said that everyone has a story to share, whether it is meant to empower others or to provide a path to healing and that this platform was meant to allow especially women to talk and network either for personal or business purposes.

“The foundation has been taking care of young girls who need a sister, and no matter what you are going through, there is someone who went through worse and survived. Today we are using this opportunity to empower one another,” Mbethe stated.
