The event brought together firefighters and nurses, who engaged with learners and introduced them to their respective professions. They explained the important work they do in communities while giving the children an opportunity to ask questions and learn through interaction.

Early exposure shapes future ambitions

Likhweti Primary teacher Londi Mathebula highlighted the importance of early exposure.

“This is a way of preparing our learners for the future. Even at Grade R level, we need to expose them to different careers so that they can start understanding what they would like to become one day,” said Mathebula.

The firefighters captured the learners’ attention by sharing information about fire safety, their responsibilities and the importance of helping people during emergencies. The nurses, meanwhile, introduced the learners to healthcare and explained how they care for people and contribute to healthy communities.

Opening minds to possibilities

Another teacher, Cynthia Mabuza, highlighted the value of early inspiration.

“When we expose children to different professions while they are still young, we open their minds to possibilities. They can begin to dream, ask questions and understand that with education and determination, they can achieve their goals,” said Mabuza.
