Pienaar model Nolwazi Mdhluli aims to inspire youth through pageantry

Beyond pageantry, the 19-year-old student gives back to her community by serving free breakfasts to grant recipients at Emoyeni Mall.

University of Mpumalanga student Nolwazi Mdhluli (19) is building her self-esteem as a finalist in the Miss Shandu 2026 pageant.

The second-year Bachelor of Development student is proving that determination, confidence and community spirit can open doors to great opportunities.

Mdhluli’s journey began in 2023 when she entered the Miss Pienaar pageant. She was crowned Miss Pienaar 2023/2024, inspiring her to continue pursuing her dreams, and she asked Mbombela to keep her in its prayers.
“I started modelling to grow my confidence and represent my home town,” she said.

Mdhluli serves community at Emoyeni Mall

Beyond the runway, she volunteers with the Emoyeni Mall team to provide free breakfasts to elderly people and individuals with disabilities when they collect grants. “For me, it is not about the title but about giving back to the community that has nurtured and raised me,” she said.

Reflecting on her modelling journey, she described it as a learning experience. “Every shoot teaches me discipline, patience and confidence. I have had moments where I have been made to get out of my comfort zone. That is where I developed my growth, and I am grateful for every opportunity that has shaped me into the person I am today,” she said.

Model overcomes self-doubt to inspire youth
Like many aspiring models, Mdhluli has had to overcome self-doubt. “I used to question if I belong in the space, but I kept showing up, working hard and surrounding myself with people who believe in me, and I learned that rejection is not a failure but a direction,” she said.

Mdhluli credits her success to her older sister, who encouraged her to pursue modelling by setting an example through her own dedication.

Mdhluli shared words of encouragement for other young women who want to enter pageantry. “Start with what you have, don’t wait for permission,” she said. “Be consistent and stay humble. Represent home proudly, and don’t compare your chapter one to someone else’s chapter 10.”
