Need to be proud of who we are

Why can't we take a cue from them and join the party to economic stability through our cultural heritage?

I’ve been watching closely throughout this Heritage Month, incidentally also known as Tourism Month, that we are now failing to celebrate it in the right manner.

This is a month where we should be demonstrating pride in our heritage and origins. We should demonstrate this by hosting various ceremonies in different communities where we celebrate our cultural heritage, but these are very scarce as people are deeply embroiled in their daily lives.

Its been a far cry to see many people clad in their traditional attire which entertains tourists and calls for good photography. This is one of the downfalls of our tourism industry which has somewhat deviated from the original way of promoting culture, instead today they are talking about eco-tourism which includes this, but we need to be more humane than rigid.

When last did we embark on domestic tourism, visit our heritage sites, had picnics and took our families out? It is important that we do it so we can educate our children to preserve our nature as it stands to benefit them in the future.

Our cultural heritage contributes to the growth of our economy. It is surprising how other provinces take advantage of it and gaining income from it and their economy is growing, yet ours is stagnant, so to speak. Places like Soweto go all out to explore just about anything in order for the community to grow in all spheres.
