This day on South African calendar, marked the death of the country’s famous child, an Aids activist Nkosi Johnson.
According to Nkosi’s Haven’s website, he was born with HIV on February 4, 1989. He died at the age of 12 on June 1, 2001.

He became a statistic; he is one of the more than 70 000 children born HIV-positive in South Africa every year.
He was a fighter though, and lived beyond his second birthday – unusual for HIV-infected babies.

He was later awarded the first Kids Rights Foundation’s international Children’s Peace Prize in Rome on November 2001.
This was for his efforts in support of the rights of children with HIV/Aids.

His legacy continues to live on through Nkosi’s Haven, which houses and supports HIV-positive mothers and children.
