The new CEO for the Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency brings vast experience and vision.

The Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency (IUCMA) has welcomed a new leader at the helm.

At just 39 years old, the newly appointed CEO, Mokgema Mongane, brings a wealth of technical expertise and leadership experience to the role, signalling a fresh chapter for the agency.

Mongane officially began his duties on June 2, and although he may be deemed young for such a position, his qualifications and vision are already being hailed as precisely what the IUCMA needs.

His academic background includes a civil engineering degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, a master’s degree in engineering management from the University of Port Elizabeth, and an MBA from the Genesis Institute.

“His extensive knowledge of water infrastructure, coupled with proven management and engineering skills, made him the ideal candidate,” she said.

“We believe he will bring innovation and energy to the IUCMA, building on our successes while strengthening our capacity to generate revenue independently without relying solely on national government funding.”

Speaking to Lowveld Media, Mongane outlined his top priorities: enhancing operational efficiency, implementing a robust revenue strategy, and investing in staff development to address morale and retention.

He also emphasised the urgent need to address pollution in rivers and dams through rigorous monitoring and effective compliance enforcement.

“Protecting our water resources is critical,” Mongane said. “Proper monitoring and firm compliance measures are essential to root out pollution and safeguard the integrity of our catchment area.”

Looking ahead, he expressed enthusiasm about joining the IUCMA and the work that lies ahead.

“I’m excited to be part of the IUCMA and to work alongside our dedicated team and board. Our collective goal is to ensure that our catchment area remains clean and that water use remains safe and sustainable. Achieving this requires unity and a shared commitment to our mission.”

With strong credentials and a clear vision, Mongane’s leadership heralds a promising new era for the IUCMA.
