Covid-19: South Africa’s death toll rises to 90

As of April 27 the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in South Africa is 4793 and the death toll now stands at 90.

SA’s number of deaths increased by three with two deaths recorded in the Western Cape and and one in KZN.

The total number of tests conducted to date is 178 470 of which 9 827 were done in the last 24 hours.

“We are seeing increasing numbers of testing from the public sector and that is encouraging, but there is still a long way to go,” said health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize on Monday morning when he briefed parliament’s portfolio committee on health.

He briefed the committee on the state of readiness of quarantine sites in the provinces.

“We started using the GeneXpert kits but the challenge is the limitation in the number of kits. We have received 10 000 kits and are expecting another 15 000 from today onwards which will increase capacity,” he said.

The Western Cape remains the epicentre with 1 737 cases followed by Gauteng with 1 353 cases.
