Cash-in-transit vehicle bombed: 6 men arrested in Limpopo

At least six men were arrested during a joint police operation, following the bombing of a cash-in transit vehicle along the R555 in Burgersfort on the evening of Monday, 28 September, Review Online reports.

“It is reported that just after 18:30 on Monday, an unknown number of suspects robbed security guards of undisclosed amount of money after allegedly using explosives to bomb the armoured vehicle,” said Police Spokesperson, Col Brenda Muridili in a statement on Tuesday.

An intelligence-driven operation, which consisted of members of the Limpopo Crime Intelligence Unit, Highway Patrol Unit and Tracking Team, Polokwane Airwing Unit as well as Tactical Response Teams from Pretoria and Ekhurhuleni, led them to Polokwane, Mokopane and Lebowakgomo, where six suspects were arrested at their respective hideouts.

Muridili said some of the stolen money was recovered during the arrests.

“The police also confiscated five vehicles, five unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Four of these vehicles are suspected to have been robbed from their owners while the fifth belongs to one of the suspects,” he added.

National Police Commissioner, Genl Khehla John Sitole commended the team for the ‘swift’ arrests of the six men.

“We will continue to be vigilant and to heighten targeted operations to counter CIT robberies in the build-up to festive season,” Sitole concluded.
