Former attorney in court for over R6-million RAF fraud

A local former attorney appeared at the Tzaneen Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for alleged fraud.

“It is alleged that between 2016 and 2018, Solomon Maboku Maponya (43) an independent attorney, represented five victims on their road accident claims for compensation from RAF,” said Limpopo Hawks spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke.

He said the victims alleged that they were confused by the pay-out delay, until they enquired from RAF officials during their roadshow in the Tzaneen area. Maluleke said they discovered that their claims were processed and paid long ago.

“A case of fraud was opened and referred to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit for further probe.

Maponya was arrested on Tuesday after he handed himself to the police.” He was given R10 000 bail and his case was postponed to 10 December.

Limpopo National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said Maponya was struck off the roll by the Pretoria High Court in 2018 for his alleged embezzlement.

She said he used his trust account to claim money from the RAF but didn’t pay the beneficiaries.
