Woman robbed at gunpoint and dropped on roadside in Durban

A woman was robbed and dropped on the side of the road after catching a taxi from her place of employment in Glen Anil, Durban North on Thursday, 21 January.

This according to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA).

RUSA spokesperson, Prem Balram said the suspect has been involved in a spate of robberies.

“He and his accomplice are believed to have robbed at least 18 people in one month,” he said.

Balram said the suspect had been routinely fetching the woman from her work place and driving her home for several months.

“The suspect drove towards Chris Hani Road (North Coast Road) instead of Phoenix where the woman lives. After questioning his new route her driver informed her that he had to make a stop. While traveling on North Coast Road he fetched a man who got into the back of the vehicle. They then joined the freeway and headed north. During the trip the male passenger produced a firearm and instructed the female to hand over her valuables. After handing over her handbag, jewellery, office keys and cellphone the victim began to resist and the suspects dropped her off on the side of the road,” he said.

The victim managed to flag down a passing motorist who drove her to uMhlanga where she borrowed a phone and contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) for assistance.

“After publishing her incident of social media, several other victims came forward stating that they had travelled with the same driver and were also robbed after he picked up his accomplice during their trip,” said Balram.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) did not send their comment at the time this article was published.
