Bystander shot, killed in armed robbery at Centurion Mall

Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and the man was declared dead on the scene earlier today (October 11).

A bystander was shot and killed during an armed robbery at a jewellery store at Centurion Mall on Monday morning.

Emergency service Emer-G-Med spokesperson, Kyle van Reenen, said medics arrived on the scene and found that one person was shot.

“The male patient was found in a state of cardiac arrest. Resuscitation efforts were attempted. However, they were unsuccessful, and the man was declared dead,” Van Reenen said.

He said that police were in attendance and would be conducting the necessary investigations.

Ruan Heyns of Cert-SA emergency medical service said two people were treated on the scene.

“The scene is still active at the moment, and I can confirm that one person was fatally wounded. He was shot in the upper body.

“Another bystander fell and injured herself while running during the robbery. Luckily the woman wasn’t badly injured,” Heyns said.

A Centurion Mall spokesperson confirmed the incident.

“The Centurion Mall can confirm a fatality on its premises following an attempted armed robbery at a jewellery store. The SAPS are on-site and we are fully co-operating with the law enforcement.”

Police could not yet confirm the shooting or provide more information at the time of going to print.
