Taxi violence claims 4 lives in Johannesburg

Besides the fatalities, five men were taken to hospital after two separate shooting incidents occurred in the area.

Police are investigating cases of attempted murder and murder following two separate incidents of taxi violence yesterday.

In the first incident, which occurred in Lehae, next to Lenasia in Johannesburg, at about 11:00, it is believed that three men were shot and injured. They were transported to the nearest hospital for urgent medical care.

According to reports, two of the victims were seated inside a taxi association patrol vehicle with the third victim standing outside when three vehicles suddenly pulled up.

The occupants of the vehicle fired shots towards the men.

A short while later, in a separate incident, Mondeor SAPS Vispol arrived on the R554 road.

Six men were driving along this route from Lehae in a taxi association patrol vehicle. It is alleged that they were followed by a silver Volkswagen Polo.

The occupants of the Polo fired gunshots towards the patrol vehicle, resulting in four men being fatally wounded. The remaining two men were injured and taken to hospital. No arrests have been made at this stage, however, investigations are ongoing.
