Gauteng farm robbery: 2 linked to teen’s murder

Weeks after Jayden Louw was killed in Bapsfontein, two men found in possession of a stolen firearm have been linked to his murder.

Police from Crystal Park in Benoni have reportedly linked two men to the murder of a 14-year-old boy who was shot dead during a house robbery on a farm in Bapsfontein more than two weeks ago.

This is after the two men were found in possession of a stolen firearm linked to a Welbekend SAPS case number that involves the murder of the teenager.

According to Crystal Park SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Lerato Mopeli, police received information about a planned robbery in Dassie Road, Petit, on October 14.

The information received stated that the suspects would be driving a silver Volkswagen Polo TSI with a specified registration number.

Mopeli says that at around 01:46 on the day, security guards spotted the vehicle and called for backup.

“When the police approached the vehicle, they found two male occupants, one in front and the other in the back seat. Upon searching the vehicle they found a .38 special Astra revolver loaded with two bullets. Investigations revealed that the firearm was reported stolen at Welbekend Police Station,” Mopeli explains.

The police officers proceeded to interview the owners of the house in Petit and it was discovered that a security guard at that property had been tied up with rope.

“The security guard was found with minor wounds, which indicated he had been bound,” says Mopeli.

The pair were arrested and charged with attempted house robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. They appeared in the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court last week.

Murder in Bapsfontein

The duo have been linked to the farm robbery in Bapsfontein on October 7, in which a teen was killed while protecting his mother and younger brother.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo says on the day, about five suspects entered the house and demanded safe keys.

Masondo explains the boy ran to the safe and took out a firearm, but the suspects overpowered him and shot him in the chest before fleeing.

Police at the time said the suspects were believed to have fled in two cars that were parked on the road.

The 14-year-old, later identified as Jayden Louw, was taken to a nearest medical care centre where he was certified dead on arrival.
