Siyabonga Sanderson (22) appeared in the KaBokweni Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga yesterday, on charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice.

He was arrested in connection with the murder of his grandfather, Albert Sanderson (75), whose body was exhumed from a shallow grave in Swalala near White River on Thursday.

Last Monday, Sanderson and the deceased reportedly had an argument when the grandfather reprimanded his grandson about bringing various girlfriends to his house.

The accused allegedly punched his grandfather, who fell on the ground. He then allegedly buried him in a shallow grave at the back of the house.

During the accused’s appearance, he told the court that he would conduct his own defense and would not apply for bail. Should he decide otherwise, the state announced its intention to oppose bail, due to the seriousness of the offence.

Sanderson was remanded in custody, and the matter was postponed to January 30 for further investigation.
