Man killed in blast at Potchefstroom SANDF military base
Two boys looking for scrap metal heard a loud explosion and alerted authorities to what turned out to be a tragic find.
A 40-year-old man was blown up in the Military Blast Ranges at the SANDF Army Base in Potchefstroom in the North West.
It is alleged that the man was searching for scrap metal at the base on Eleazer Road when he supposedly picked up a live mortar round before being killed in a blast on Friday.
According to North West SAPS spokesperson Captain Aafje Botma, two boys, who attempted to pick up scrap metal in the area, alerted authorities after they heard a loud explosion.
“They heard a terribly loud bang and saw the man, sitting next to a tree. They ran and immediately called for help,” she says.
Police are investigating the incident.
