Ekurhuleni finance adjudicator gunned down

Police are investigating an alleged murder after a municipal official was shot and killed inside his vehicle while waiting for a traffic light to turn green.

Simnikiwe Mapini, who was employed as an adjudicator in the City of Ekurhuleni Finance Department, was shot and killed near Rand Airport in Germiston while travelling with a colleague.

He was shot last Friday, and his memorial service will take place today.

City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini says the colleagues had stopped at a red traffic light when two armed men allegedly exited another vehicle and started shooting at Mapini before fleeing the scene.

“It is unclear what the motive was. Mapini was declared dead on the scene. His colleague was not injured in the incident,” says Dlamini.

“This is a sad incident and one that has shocked the entire municipality.

“This was a hard-working young man, and our condolences go to family, friends and colleagues during this trying time,” he adds.

Police are investigating a case of murder.
