Horror incident in Mpumalanga: Girl (19) gang raped, another (15) killed

A motorist suspects the girl was killed when she landed in front of a car as she tried to run away from the men chasing her.

The police in Vosman are on the hunt for two suspects responsible for the gang rape of a 19-year-old girl and who caused the death of a 15-year-old girl in a hit-and-run accident.

Vosman Police spokesperson Captain Lizzy Hlathi said the incidents happened on Wednesday, December 20, between 20:30 and 23:30.

Hlathi said the victims were at a park in eMalahleni at around 18:45 when they were approached by two unknown men who offered to buy them liquor. After the group shared a few drinks, the men suggested they move to KG Mall.

At the mall, more liquor was bought from a tavern.

The men then suggested that they should all go to a guest house in Vosman.

Hlathi said the surviving victim told police when they got to the guest house, they asked to go home but the men refused and insisted they all sleep there.

The 19-year-old victim alleged that she was assaulted by both men, using bottles.

The two girls somehow managed to escape.

According to Hlathi, the men followed them and caught up with the 19-year-old girl. She was assaulted and raped by both suspects.

It is alleged that the men then left the woman in the bushes where the rape took place.

She told police that she went searching for her friend when she was told about a pedestrian accident on the N4. The description of the victim who died in the accident fitted that of her friend.

A motorist on the N4 noticed shattered pieces of glass on the road and realised that there had been an accident.

“I followed the pieces of glass and saw what appeared to be a shoe. Meters away from the shoe I saw a body. I immediately stopped and tried to get the attention of other drivers, but to no avail,” Bathini Innocent Letlaka said.

He then took the nearest off-ramp and made a U-turn. He reported the accident and called ER24.

I’m guessing the hit-and-run was because guys were chasing the girl. It was not safe for the driver to stop and access,” Letlaka said.

Anyone with information about the suspects is requested to contact Vosman Police Station on 079 891 5314.
