Burning man seen running in Ekurhuleni parking lot

It appears that a man who collapsed outside a shopping centre after sustaining severe burns had attempted to dig up power cables.

A man is in hospital fighting for his life after catching fire while allegedly trying to steal cables from a transformer at Karaglen in Edenvale, Ekurhuleni, last Thursday.

An eyewitness told Bedfordview and Edenvale News that the suspect came running across the road to the parking lot at Karaglen Shopping Centre.

“I heard loud noises of someone calling for help, only to spot a guy running around in the parking lot on fire. He was covered in flames and had a reflective jacket on.

“The suspect then collapsed in the parking lot,” said the eyewitness, who does not want to be named.

An ambulance took him to hospital.

Paramedics took the burnt man to the hospital.

Ekurhuleni SAPS district communications officer Captain Neldah Sekgobela says Edenvale police responded to the scene.

“On arrival, they found an unknown male with burn wounds. It was alleged the suspect was tampering with essential infrastructure, digging up cables, when a fire started.

“He sustained severe burned wounds.”

An inquiry docket has been opened at the Edenvale Police Station.
