Former Amanzimtoti cop allegedly books son out of prison

A former SAPS branch commander who allegedly took her son out of jail without court documentation is due to again appear in court on March 27.

Nokulunga Gumede (59) made a brief appearance in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, facing charges of obstructing the course of justice and unauthorised removal of an inmate from a correctional service centre.

KZN Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo says Gumede was employed by the SAPS as a branch commander holding the rank of captain at KwaMakhutha Police Station in Amanzimtoti, KZN.

“It is alleged that on April 17, 2020, the former captain went to Westville Prison and booked out her biological son without being in possession of proper documents from court.

“This was allegedly done without the knowledge of the investigating officer. Her son was detained for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm,” says Gumede.
